Wellspring’s Food and Clothing Cupboard
Each Saturday morning Old First and its volunteers provide food, clothing and toiletries to 30-80 people (mostly men). The cupboard functions as a “free store,” offering as much dignity and choice as possible given the availability of donations from week to week. Wellspring’s Food & Clothing Cupboard is a site for Philabundance, a hunger relief effort in the Philadelphia area.
To Volunteer
Volunteers are welcome on Saturday mornings for a full shift from 9 am to 12 pm or for a half-shift from 8 to 10 am or 10 am to 12 pm. Volunteers are also welcome to sort clothing at other times and to pick up food from the Philabundance warehouse. Contact the church for more information about volunteering.
To Donate Food
The food cupboard always needs the following food items:
- Meats (pop-top cans) — such as corned beef, Spam-type meat, Vienna-type sausages, meatballs, sardines, tuna, ham, etc.
- Vegetables (pop-top cans)
- Fruit (individual servings)
- Meals (pop-top cans or microwave bowls) — such as chili, ravioli, spaghetti, soups
- Juice (juice boxes or small pop-top cans)
- Peanut butter and jelly in plastic jars
- Tuna in non-pop top cans
- Breakfast/energy bars
- Peanut butter crackers
- Crackers in a sleeve such as saltines
To Donate Clothing
Wellspring accepts donations of new or gently-used men’s clothing, especially pants (preferably sizes 30-38), underwear (all sizes). Please make sure used clothing is clean and in good condition. Clothing appropriate for the current season is preferred, due to limited storage space.
Please contact the church in advance to arrange for donations.
Please note: We are unable to accept women’s or children’s clothing.
