Old First was the site of the founding of the German Reformed Churches of America. The founding “Coetus” (synod) gathered at Old First on September 24, 1747.
Many years and changes later, the Philadelphia Association of the newly founded United Church of Christ, a denomination formed by the 1957 merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches, was also founded at Old First. That association will celebrate its 50th anniversary next October. Old First, the assocation’s oldest congregations, has been asked to host that association-wide celebration.
The first meeting of the planning committee will be this Sunday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. in Michael’s office. That will gather leaders from all the area UCC churches. It would be good to begin to organize the Old First contingent that will be involved in the planning and hosting of this event.
Anyone who is interested in rolling up her or his sleeves and working on this is welcome. If you have any questions, please speak with Beth Walker or Michael Caine.
