A Sense of Community with Our Homeless Shelter (opening this Fri., 11.01)

As the colder weather pushes its way in, Old First prepares for one of its biggest, annual outreach ministries : the Men’s Shelter. This Friday, Nov. 1, is the first night. We will welcome our shelter guests on Friday with a meal by the Outreach Standing Leadership Group. If you want to be involved, feel free to get in touch with Steve W. or Kayla. Or even just stop by the church around 6PM to be a part of our first night’s dinner.

If you are new, or just need a refresher, the shelter has been a part of Old First’s ministry since 1984, in partnership with the Bethesda Project. Our Social Hall becomes an overnight home for approximately 30 homeless men from November 1st to April 30th, where they arrive at approximately 7 PM and then leave at 7 AM the next morning. The meals that are served three or four nights a week (with leftovers often in between) and eating with the volunteers who prepare the food give the men of a shelter a sense of community with one another and respect from the wider world. Bethesda provides night supervisors and as well as serving the men through primary social services and case management.

If you have more questions, or want to figure out how to get involved, please speak with Kayla or Steve.
