It’s sad… how much we have to keep striving to catch up (not even keep up!) with the number of people killed in violent crimes in Philadelphia.
We have almost 40 doves flying in the oak tree in the courtyard, and another 20 in the Sanctuary. Our Sunday Schoolers created about 20 more last Sunday… But the “body count” is already up to 97. And those aren’t just bodies, but sons and fathers and brothers and sisters and mothers and daughters who have been killed in our city this year.
On Sunday, June 9, after worship, we will be organizing another dove-making session. We try to remember the sacredness of those whose lives were lost. And the seriousness of our society’s need to get gun violence under control.
And then we fashion the bodies and wings from plastic, or add the beads and name tags (for victims whose names we can know).
People have said that making the Doves has become a form of praying with one’s hands creating something. Please plan to join us.
