Adult Forum in January — Talking Like a Prophet: The Prophetic Imagination and American Social Criticism

Coming out of the seasons of Advent and Christmas, images of deserts blossoming, swords and ploughshares ring in our ears, framing the story of the birth of Jesus and building a foundation for Christian belief.

Jesus too drew heavily from prophets like Isaiah in his own ministry.

But what of the prophetic tradition beyond the Bible? Jumping off of theologian Walter Brueggeman’s description of “Prophetic Imagination”, in this next series for the Adult Forum — Sunday mornings in the Social Hall at 9:45 a.m., we will explore how prophetic speech is woven into the DNA of American social criticism.

Through reading, listening to, and watching speeches from different periods, we will ask how these figures evoked prophetic voices and what our prophetic imaginations are telling us today.
