Alternative Xmas Gifts to Benefit King’s School in India

Alternative Xmas Gifts to Benefit King’s School in India
When thinking of giving a gift to that impossible person, think of giving a charitable gift in their honor. For the person that has everything, a gift in their honor could mean so much more than new sweater or coffee mug.
This year our congregation’s Alternative Christmas Gift will benefit the UCC Global Ministries initiative to assist with education at King’s Matriculation School in India. King’s Matriculation School serves the children at the Family Village Farm, many of whom are sponsored through the Global Ministries Child Sponsorship Program. The school also serves 300 non-resident children from nearby villages.
For many families a choice has to be made between sending their child to school, or sending their child to work. Unfortunately, this decision is not made by the parents, but by their circumstances – often poverty robs parents of the opportunity to give their child a better future because of immediate demands.
Global Ministries — a joint effort of the UCC and the Christian Church/Disciples of Christ — works with local partners that provide practical educations that families can afford and that restore many of the opportunities that poverty has taken away.
Examples of what your gift can do:
$15 could provide school supplies for a child
$40 could start to build a resource library
$100 could help to repair a classroom
Some of the ongoing projects at the school include:
(1) construction of girls’ restrooms. As attendance rises, the need for more bathroom space has also risen;
(2) scholarships to cover attendance. The children who receive scholarship funds exhibit both a deep financial need and are above average in academic achievement;
(3) and classroom construction. The government has required the school to build a new building to be adjacent to the old classrooms or lose their license. The school has taken out a loan of $200,000 to cover the building expense and hopes to have it paid off by the end of 2016.
Ways to give:
~If you put a check in the offering plate, designate King’s School in your memo line. We will send one large check to Global Ministries.
~If you are giving electronically, you can also designate King’s School in the “note” section.
Beginning next week there will be designation cards available in church so that you can fill out who you’d like to honor with an Alternative Gift. The honoree will be notified with a letter or card from the Global Ministries explaining the project and what this gift means to King’s School.
If you have questions about the Alternative Gift giving process, please speak with Billi at church or e-mail her at billinaction23@yahoo.com.
