Daehler might be a name Old First recognizes, but he isn’t known to most of our worshipers these days. But he will be soon.
He was Old First’s pastor from 1971 to 1983, arriving shortly after Old First renovated our current buildings having moved back to 4th and Race from Locust and 50th in West Philly. Perhaps it’s apochryphal, but Michael quotes Daehler as saying, “If we are going to be downtown, let’s be a church for the whole city.” Daehler’s tenure was when Old First began developing its concern for and ministry to the urban poor.
After Daehler left Old First, he became the UCC’s Conference Minister for the Rhode Island Conference, where he served until he retired.
His sermon on Anniversary Sunday will be entitled “Absorbing Errands.” Please join us to welcome Daehler back and to celebrate the church’s 287th birthday.
