Book Group on Race and Racism
Our book group on race and racism will meet after worship on Sunday, Nov 11 to discuss Slavery’s Constitution: From Revolution to Ratification, by David Waldstreicher.
The word slavery does not appear in the Constitution, yet of its eighty-four clauses, six are directly concerned with enslaved people and their owners. All but one of these clauses protects slavery. One points to a possible future in which the “peculiar institution” might be ended. The Revolutionary ideals in the Constitution eventually led to questioning slavery, to Abolition, and to the Civil Rights Movement. This work of narrative history is readable, not very long, available in libraries, bookstores, and at the Constitution Center.
