Bring a Photo of a Loved One to Church for All Saints Sunday, Nov. 6

Someone on the UCC’s pastor’s FB group asked this week: “How to squeeze in Reformation Sunday, All Saints, Election Day in the next few weeks?” Our solution at Old First, election on 10.23; reformation on 10.30; all saints on 11.06. But Michael was impressed by the discussion — how thoroughly celebrated All Saints is in the UCC now days. Because it’s an important Christian holy day — remembering those who have gone before us.

Old First has lost its number of saints recently. Even more when we count the extended family and our circles. It seems fitting that we gather to remember and to give thanks for their ongoing influence and blessing on our lives.

We will do so this year in a new way. Traditionally, the prayers of the people on All Saints’ Sunday are our calling out the names of those who have gone before us.

This year you are encouraged to bring a picture of a loved one who has died. Place it on the communion table before worship or during the first hymn. At Communion, we will have a more visible image of All the Saints who join us at the Lord’s Supper…
