Christmas (and a Christmas Dinner) and New Year’s with our Shelter Guests? (we’re looking for volunteers)

Dear Old First,

As you might remember, last holiday season, all were invited to participate in welcoming Christmas as well as the New Year with our Winter Shelter guests.

This year is no different. I am inviting all who are interested in celebrating Christmas as well as New Year’s with the guys from our shelter.  This past Thanksgiving I had the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with the guys – which was certainly special and memorable.

The idea is that for Shelter guests who don’t have family to visit for the holidays, we keep the Shelter open all day both of those days. It’s a leisurely day for the men, to sleep in or take a midday naps. The t.v. is on and guys play cards or board games. It’s a great treat when normally you are out of your shelter by 7 am and not back in until 6 pm.

This Christmas, those who are interested in spending some time with our guests are invited to take 2 hour incremental shifts from 6:30am to 6:30pm. This will allow the guys 1) time to sleep in (as they normally leave the shelter by 7am daily) 2) an opportunity for those who take the early or mid morning shift to prepare a Christmas breakfast (if you wish) most importantly 3) time to get to know the men who make up the shelter.

If you’re interested in volunteering Christmas day, please visit http://www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0D44ADAD23A02-christmas1 or feel free to send me an email at athomas@oldfirstucc.org. (In the coming weeks, I’ll be posting a link to volunteer on New Years Day.)

Also, Michael has decided to two services on Christmas day — at 11 am and 4 pm., so everyone who wants to get to church can fit it in. He’s really interested in knowing if there might be some people who’d like to join him after the 4 pm service in preparing a Christmas dinner for the men? Please let him know if you are interested, or know others who might be…

Old First and friends of Old First, thank you in advance for your commitment to serving the underserved and importantly for continuously supporting Outreach and all of our Outreach ministries!

Best,

Alesha ~ Outreach Coordinator
