Confirmation Class Gets Going with Breakfast on Sun., 09.14 @ 9:45 a.m.

Our last Confirmation Class with Pastor Michael

Jonathan V. and Michael will be teaching the Confirmation Class this program year– Sept. until confirmation occurs in either late May or June. At 10 a.m. each Sunday in Michael’s office. All of our 7th and 8th graders (and anyone older who hasn’t yet been confirmed) are encouraged to participate in preparation for becoming full, adult members of Old First.

We are going to begin on Sept. 14, with a breakfast for all the confirmands, their parents and their sponsors.

At that meeting (on the second floor of the Christian Ed building), we hope to begin with a bit of faith sharing: where the parent and sponsor and confirmands can talk about what they believe and what they doubt and what they just don’t understand. We’ll also offer a schedule for the year, and some tentative dates when we are going to take the kids to visit other worship experiences. And answer any questions.

So that brings up an important issue: SPONSORS. At Old First, having all of our confirmands walk with an adult member of our church, as the confimands move towards becoming adult members of our church is very important to us.

The first consideration in choosing a sponsor is someone who your confirmand will look forward to and enjoy relating with. We are intending for your child and this adult to develop a strong and close mentoring relationship over the coming year.
The second consideration is whether or not a potential sponsor can commit to the time involved.

Yajeh and Michael and Jonathan have put their heads together, and here’s how we’re going to try to organize the mentors for this year’s Confirmation Class:
After the Breakfast on Sept. 14 (which we hope everyone can attend), there will be little need for the mentors to participate on Sundays at 10 a.m. Instead, we’re going to prepare special monthly assignments for each confirmand and her/his mentor to work on together. We expect that mentors and confirmands will need to find a mutually agreeable time each month when they can meet and work together for 1 to 2 hours on their assignment.  So, it’s a significant commitment of time, but flexibly scheduled…

Please speak with your child and encourage them to participate in Confirmation Class. Then decide who and how to reach out to invite someone to be his or her sponsor. If we want them to be able to join us on Sept. 14, we need to get on folks’ calendars.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or suggestions or thoughts, or if Michael or Jonathan V. or Yajeh can be helpful, please reach out to them.
