Thank you to everyone who stayed after worship on Sunday April 28th to attend the congregational meeting!
The budget amendment was passed unanimously! Below is a link to a snapshot of the amended budget:
Additionally, Janice provided us with a thorough and appreciated report on roof and attic repairs:
“The Elders approved spending of up to $120,000 for repair of the roof and improvements to the attic after roof leaks became apparent. This is considered a capital investment and comes out of the endowment.
The roof has been replaced. It was 26 years old and had some plywood underlayment that needed replacing. A ridge vent and soffit vents were approved by the Preservation Society and installed along with new shingles.
Cost for roofing and demolition of old roof and removal of debris-$47,016.
One of the downspouts on the West side fell off and the cost to install a new one will be $15,000.
Reuben, Janice and Michael have worked on the most cost-effective way to have the back round window in the attic repaired or replaced. It is not a historic window and was installed when Old first moved back to the building in 1969. It was installed backwards which has contributed to rot. It has not been maintained and there is glass and wood parts missing.
We got a price from Fairmont conservancy that repaired our sanctuary windows. The price seemed high and involved masonry repairs that Reuben didn’t think were necessary. They gave us the names of two contractors they felt would do a good job.
We met with George Draguns. His business builds windows and installs. He discussed his needs with us and his method and materials for the window. He needs a platform at the South end of the attic under the window to work on. We asked George to first install a plywood cover for the window opening so we can discard unused materials from the attic out the window opening. This will help us get ready to insulate the attic. He is scheduled for June 10 and 11th to remove the existing window for us as a template for the new window and to install the temporary cover. He will then build and paint a new window and install it. He will have to install scaffolding to get the window up to the opening on the outside. The window will not be operative, but gives us natural light in the attic and will stop the water and air infiltration. It is not very visible from the South but will look like the window in the front of the church. His price is $11,000.00.
Ricky recently finished the platform for us costing $3,200.
Our next step is to prepare for insulation starting with the attic clean out. Ricky will build boxes around the lights so that they are still available from the attic for bulb replacement. He will build an enclosure around the sunburst vent and create paths with planks so it is easier to move in the space.
Insulation will be blown in and is expected to cost about $14,000.
Once the new window is in place we can repaint where there is water damage from roof leaks.
costs so far:
roofing (completed) $47,016
install new downspout (not yet in place) $15,000
new window and installation $11,000
new platform $3,200
insulation (estimate) $14,000
total without painting, removing trash
from attic and Ricky’s carpentry $90,216″
