Continued Success at the Saturday Cupboard

Hello everyone,

And we’re officially in November. As we’re nearing the end of 2020 with the many highs and lows it’s had, the work we provide to those in need always continues. And with that, I have some updates for you:

  • The past two Saturdays have been extremely busy at Old First as we served 52 and 51 guests! These are our highest numbers to date. Because of this, I am extremely low on clothes and am looking to restock ASAP. As far as what we need the most, they are:
    • Pants/jeans/sweatpants size 32-46/M-4x
    • Long sleeve shirts size M-4x
    • Jackets/coats/sweatshirts size M-4x
  • Anyone that would like to drop off clothes can do so Monday through Friday from 9-5 pm
  • The shelter start date is on the 9th, just in time with the new floors 🙂  That’s THIS coming Monday. I am still looking to fill several slots for shelter dinners, so if you are interested in cooking a shelter meal, you can sign up here:

And this week’s Volunteer of the Week is … Alice  🙂

For those of you who don’t know Alice, she is a newer volunteer that has dedicated her last 6 Saturday mornings to Old First and our guests. When asked to provide a short bio about herself and what this work means to her, this is what she had to say:

“I recently moved to the Philly area for a year of service with AmeriCorps, and I wanted to volunteer somewhere within the community on the weekends. The Saturday Cupboard was a meaningful way to learn more about the needs in my neighborhood. I find myself attuned to the weather as it gets colder, and the guests often ask for thicker clothing items that will keep them warm. I am glad that the Saturday Cupboard exists because many guests express to me their gratitude for all the support they have received from it.”

Thank you so much to Alice and all of our volunteers who continue to help week after week. We could not do this crucial work without all of you!
