Crypt Clean Out

Crypt Clean Out

Do you have a junk drawer?  Old First has a really big one–the crypts.  In anticipation of having to figure out how to reconfigure our space both during and after the congregation’s project to use the 4th St. parcel for permanent housing for homeless, Admin gave the go-ahead for an initial clean out the crypts.

“Initial clean out” is key. More clean out will have to be done eventually…and not just the crypts.  It took two strong men six to seven hours over the course of two days to haul our accumulated junk out and up the steep, narrow stairway from the crypts to the lower narthex.  Janice S. and Nancy D. had earlier decided what could go and what should stay and worked alongside the men on both days. The men filled two large trucks with not an inch to spare.

This first stab at cleaning out our years of crypts storage went well.  Still to be done is a careful sweeping/cleaning of the crypt floor, planning for efficient and easily accessed storage units, installing those storage units, waterproofing the crypts, and improving the lighting.
