Old First has ordered Easter flowers this year, as it has historically done every Easter. In years past, we would decorate the Sanctuary with them to create a beautiful and joyous atmosphere on Easter morning! However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Old Firsters will not be physically worshiping in the Sanctuary on Easter Sunday (although we will still worship together virtually!) As with much of the church right now, we are re-imagining what to do with the Easter flowers.
In the past, people could buy flowers in memory or honor of loved ones; this year, we thought it would be nice to have folks buy flowers FOR another church member. We will offer drive-by pick-up on Saturday, April 11, so that people will have the flowers in their home on Easter. (If anyone cannot pick up the flowers gifted to them, we will figure out how to deliver.)
As you consider who to buy flowers for, think about those church folks that you don’t speak to as often. In these trying and isolating times, we want to stay as connected as possible, and one way to do that is by sending them flowers! It might seem small, but every act of thoughtfulness counts these days!
If you want to send flowers to someone, please send a check to Old First with a note for your flower order. On the note, please include: the number of flowers you want to order, and who you are sending flowers to. On the check, please write “flowers” in the memo line. One flower purchase costs $15. (So if you order 2 flowers for 2 different church members, the total cost would be $30, and you could use a post-it not to indicate “Bob Jones” and “Lisa Smith,”). Please make checks payable to: Old First Reformed Church. The mailing address to send them to is: 151 N 4th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
The church will contact the members who are receiving flowers. On the Saturday before Easter (April 11) between 1pm – 3pm, people who received flowers can drive by the church and pick them up. With the right precautions taken, a church staff member will bring the flowers to your car. (If someone receives flowers who cannot physically come and pick them up, church staff will arrange somehow for them to be delivered as well.) Our hope is that many Old Firsters will then have a flower pot of Easter flowers with them in their home as we open worship on Easter Sunday morning!
