For four days I had the pleasure of hosting the First Congregational UCC from Grand Blanc, Michigan. The group consisted of eight youth and two adults. On Sunday, after arriving they did their grocery shopping and got settled in at Old First. Monday consisted of a massive sprinkler system installation. Five of the guys helped Michael, Chris and Andrew in the courtyard to make this happen. The other five participants were at a Youth Services, Inc site in Germantown. They helped to organize an office space for use in one of their facilities. In the evening, the group traveled together to Chosen 300 on Spring Garden to serve dinner to over 200 people!
On Tuesday the group went on a tour of Philadelphia with Bruce Clark. He told them about his experiences on the street and educated them about why some people are living on the streets. After lunch, FCUCC helped Valerie in the courtyard getting plants in the ground. This was the week of Old First work!
On Wednesday part of the group went to Philabundance Community Food Center. It works as a grocery store and volunteers help the guests with healthy shopping. The other part of the group walked to Sunday Breakfast Mission and served/shared a meal with the guests there. In the afternoon, they helped me sort out donations for the Cupboard. Later in the evening Pat Malley and Bruce Clark came to talk with the youth about the causes of homelessness and what people can do to advocate for homeless people. This was the groups last night at Old First and they plan to provide a worship service back in Grand Blanc on Sunday so they planned that out for the rest of their evening.
This group was a great help to the crews who help out in our courtyard. Irrigation system got put in and various gardening projects were completed and new ones started. These projects could have taken longer if we didn’t have the extra hands – experienced hands – helping us! HUGE thanks to everyone who worked with the service campers this week!
