Funeral Procession for Our Public Schools, Fri., 05.09 @ 4 p.m.

POWER’s Education Team, responding to schools chancellor Hite’s recent announcement of yet another, “annual” budget funding crisis, is organizing a funeral procession from City Hall to Governor Corbett’s Philly office at the Bellevue to mourn the death of PA public schools.

Imagine pallbearers walking solemnly down Broad Street carrying a coffin on the sides of which has been painted “The Death of our Public Schools.” With children, parents, teachers and concerned neighbors, all dressed in black, walking in silence behind the casket.

This bleak message is to drive home the severity of the situation: we’re glad so many of the gubernatorial candidates have picked up the mantra and are now talking about a “funding formula.” But dividing up crumbs is not solution. A funding formula — and education in PA — needs serious money behind it!

The people need to demand that the city and the state stop robbing our children and pony up.

More information will be forthcoming, but we will be gathering at or near City Hall before 4 p.m. on Friday, May 9. We need to turn up the heat if there’s any hope of some political movement and funding for our children’s education…
