Sirach 15:15-20

Mark 12: 13-17

Jesus’ response to a trick question, ‘Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s, ’ simply means that it is God who reigns rather than Caesar. Jesus lives under the authority of the kingdom of God; he does not live under the authority of Caesar. Jesus will give to God what belongs to God, that is, everything….and that may very well include legitimately paying taxes as part of shared responsibility in a social compact.  How do we decide what to render to God and what to render to our government as part of our shared civic responsibility?
