“There is Division and then There is Division”
Our times seem so unsettled. More strife, and deadly violence. And the “middle ground” in which most of politics — the compromises — could be hammered out seems to have disappeared. We want Jesus’ help trying to figure out how to bring people together and get to a better place where there’s room for us to work with one another to solve the multiple problems facing our day and world. But today’s Gospel text makes Jesus out to be a flame-thrower scorching the earth and one who rather than unifying is the very cause of division. Where’s a text like that leave us in a world like ours?
