Getting Ready for this Sunday and our Blessing of the Animals, 10.16.16

Psalm 148: 1-5, 7-13
Genesis 1:20-25
“Is It Really a Dog Eat Dog World?”

This Sunday is a special service for us: the Blessing of the Animals, in homage to St. Francis of Assissi.

This is the Sunday when we bring our pets to church with us. Actually, Margaret and Jim bring their dog every week, but they usually leave him in the car. This Sunday, they — along with the rest of you — can come to worship with a pet dog, cat, hamster, parrot or snake.

If you don’t have one, you might borrow a friend or neighbor’s animal. Or better yet, invite the friend or neighbor too. We promise we can come up with a whole-hearted welcome for every creature, and a blessing appropriate for whatever faith tradition your animal adheres to.

Weather permitting, we will be worshipping outside in the front courtyard. So a jacket and sunglasses are good preparation. And if you wish, you might even be more informal than usual… The animals don’t get too gussied up (except for the Atwood’s Chiuahuahs that have showed up in pink tutus, but most of the pets are in their birthday suits)…
