“Oh look, yet another Christmas TV special! How touching to have the meaning of Christmas brought to us by cola, fast food, and beer… Who’d have ever guessed that product consumption, popular entertainment, and spirituality would mix so harmoniously?” ― Bill Watterson
Christmas in its contemporary celebration / practice often dovetails surprisingly well with some of our most powerful cultural norms, assumptions, and values of the world in which we live. Curious, huh? Jesus was born in a manger because there wasn’t room for him in the world of his day… any more then there would be in our world today.
Make a list of how Christmas calls you to live differently — not like most people, but, instead, walking a less traveled path, according to standards, mores and values (or a Way!) other than those of the dominant society. The longer the list the better!
Extra credit: Read Psalm 37 twice today, with a significant time between each reading. What is God saying to you?
