Living Christ Calendar — the 1st Day of Christmas

Dec. 26:

When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and the princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flocks,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among people,
To make music in the heart.

— Howard Thurman

It’s so much work getting through all the ways we build up to or celebrate Christmas BEFORE the holy day, many of us just slump into an exhausted rest afterwards. “Whew. It’s over. We made it. Thank God, we don’t have to muster that much energy until next year.”

What if, however, Christmas really is, much as it promises, an invitation to new life? What if Advent is really about preparing and getting ready. And the 25th, rather than signifying the end of all our snowballing activity, is when we are really supposed to get started. Living differently. Because God has come to live with us in Christ. And we are now supposed to start really living in new ways…

Take your rest, beloved. But don’t lose sight of the road opening ahead of us. Or the Christ child leading us.

Today’s assignment: Take your pick — finding the lost; healing the broken; releasing the prisoner; rebuilding the nations; bringing peace among people; making music in the heart — choose one (or more if you have that much energy!), and decide on something concrete you can do towards that end. And then get it done within the week. As your beginning the work of Christmas. (If you wish, I’d love to know what you choose and what it turns out like for you.)
