James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
I won’t speak for everyone, but for me it’s so difficult to live the Word of God. Not because I necessarily disagree with it, but because I am just listening and not always absorbing it.
We often come to church with so much on our minds and with heavy hearts. Our intent is to worship, our intent is to listen, absorb and ultimately leave fulfilled in God’s grace, mercy, strength and wisdom – ready to live out His word wholly.
With so much distracting us, absorbing God’s word/teaching is not always easy, but this Sunday, I encourage you—no, I challenge you to absorb the word. I challenge you to live it out in full this coming week. And I challenge you to meditate, free your mind of all life’s stressors and for the hour and a half you’re in church on Sunday only focus on God’s teaching.
I won’t speak for everyone, but for me – when I believe I am living out God’s word, what I am actually doing is living out my own interpretation of the word of God.
When I have a difficult day, week or month (and trust me this past month has been an emotional rollercoaster) I am not truly seeking out God’s strength and wisdom, instead I am doing what I believe or what feels right – and not what God says is right.
Have you ever let your emotions get the best of you? It happens to me all the time. But thinking back on this past month’s hardships – if during worship, or during my own meditation I took the time to absorb His word and not just listen – perhaps those hardships wouldn’t be so emotionally difficult.
This Sunday — this week, take on the challenge. Don’t just listen, Do! Let’s live out the word of God and as James 1:22 says: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
Blessings this week
