POWER’s Education Team is organizing people to join folks from across the state for a day of lobbying in Harrisburg this coming Tuesday, June 25. All the details are still getting worked out, but the broad outlines are:
Leave by bus at 8:30 a.m. and return to Philly by 6 p.m. In between, minus travel time, a full day of lobbying state officials for equitable and just funding contributions for public education in the school district of Philadelphia and in other districts across this state.
One of the greatest successes of the POWER / Philadelphia Student Union Rally in front of the Governor’s Philly office last Friday was transferring the focus of the funding question off the City itself, and beginning to target the Governor and the State Legislature. Afterall, the funding crisis is not just a Philadelphia problem. State funding for public education has dropped by nearly $1 billion since 2011, and almost every district is feeling the heat of budget cuts. Many, like Philadelphia, are facing disastrous reductions.
P.S. The picture is so small, you may not recognize Rebecca C. protesting with a friend from Central H.S. last Friday!
