The McCall Home & School Dim Sum Chinatown Event in honor of Chinese New Year is being held on Saturday, February 26th at 12:30 at Joy Tsin Lau restaurant (a few blocks west of the church on Race Street in Chinatown). All are welcome to join in the celebration.
There will be performances of Chinese music, poetry, and dance by McCall students, and good food: Dim Sum lunch with shrimp, vegetable and beef dumplings, soup, Good Luck noodles, beef satay, spring rolls, buns, dessert and more. A Silent Auction with great gifts to benefit McCall Home & School will also be held.
As many of you know, Old First has had a relationship with McCall over the past few years. McCall School is the public school that serves Old First’s physical neighborhood, including Chinatown. Two of our members, Bobbie Benjamin and Julius DeAngelus, work at McCall.
As a Philadelphia public school, McCall faces many financial challenges (with worse to come according to the recent article in the Inquirer!). The school is also challenged (and blessed!) by incredible diversity. The student population is over 60% Asian – several of those students attended summer camp at Old First this past year. There are also two homeless shelters that McCall serves, so at any given time up to 10% of the student population is homeless. Despite its challenges, McCall was named a Vanguard school – one of the most successful in the district.
A big part of McCall’s success is due to the dedication of its staff, parents, and community partners. Through amazing fundraising efforts on their part over the past few years, McCall now has a real playground, a working library with computers, smart boards in most classrooms, and a thriving “100 Book Challenge” program. The Home & School Association is now working on fundraising to upgrade the science lab.
Please join in the celebration of the Year of the Rabbit! To R.S.V.P., please let Bobbie Benjamin know; you can also let Mindy in the office know and she will get word to Bobbie.
