Hello! My name is John Owens, and I’ll be joining your community as the new onsite Program Assistant. I’m excited Old First asked me to be a part of this community, and to join them in their fight against the various issues affecting our city and community of Philadelphia.
We are each called to be in Mission with the Church, and to endure the hardships of our brothers and sisters. We must combat the systemic issues that continue to silence and oppress those who look just like us. Scripture gives us examples of extraordinary stories of selfless love, and I believe Old First is truly living out those examples. This task takes time, energy, and volunteers to sustain a ministry, and it’s my prayer that I’ll be useful to the aid in that task.
In the past two years, I served with the Episcopal Service Corps in Northwest Philadelphia at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. There the dramatic disparity of wealth and homelessness are truly present on the streets of Germantown. These scenes are common throughout our city, and it’s our duty as Christians [humans] to respond to these issues with love and compassion.
During my time at Old First, I hope to build relationships with its members and to make meaningful connections that reflect the mission and purpose of Old First UCC. I will also discern the idea of ordained ministry.
I’ve been a resident of Philadelphia for six years now. I received a B.A. in Religious Studies and a minor in Political Science from La Salle University. While attending La Salle, I was active in campus life as a Community Service Scholar, Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity, a volunteer coordinator, and a barista among other roles.
