This Midday Meeting will be an art show about representations of the Annunciation. I became interested in this subject when I once spent several months in Florence, Italy, where Annunciation art abounds. I realized that in my Protestant upbringing I had never seen pictures of Gabriel and Mary before, and I found them very beautiful.
Annunciation art is based on the story in Luke 1:26-38, but it conveys its sacred message pictorially through human interactions. I will talk about various depictions of the angel and Virgin and ask what meaning (if any) these Catholic images might have for us in the Protestant church today.
(As is our custom: we will gather at church in the Social Hall at 1 pm with brown bag lunches — and usually food to share. We will get started about 1:30 pm, and finish before 3 pm. Anyone is welcome, even if you have never joined us before…)
