Are you looking for a great UCC experience for the young person in your life? Have you considered the National Youth Event sponsored by the United Church of Christ?
This years event will be held at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana on July 10-13,2012. The NYE Youth Vision Team selected Isaiah 43:19 as your spiritual mantra for NYE 2012. “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
The conference will showcase a variety of workshops as well as service projects for youth to participate in! A few of the highlights are “Imagine a World Where Differences are Embraced” and a Twitter Town Hall with Geoffrey Black, UCC General Minister and President. JR Martinez of “All My Children” and “Dancing with the Stars” fame will be speaking as will Dr. Marcia McFee, a minister who spoke at General Synod 28. She promotes music, theatre in dance in worship service. Climbing PoeTree is a duo of soul-stirring and heart-opening poetry by Alixa and Naima. “It challenges its listeners to remember their humanity, dissolves apathy with hope, exposes injustice, and helps heal our inner trauma so that we may begin to cope with the issues facing our communities.” These are just a few of the highlights.
One of the greatest parts of National Youth Event is that youth get to spend a few days with other youth exploring their spirituality and having fun. This is a fantastic opportunity for youth to be involved other than serving in worship at Old First. Old First is planning to chaperon youth that would like to attend, but we need to start planning now. We will be traveling on our own or with other UCC youth on the bus provided by our conference.
If you know someone who is interested in attending with Old First, please contact Michael or Billi as soon as possible.
