Enjoy a traditional Nicaraguan rice & beans dinner and support the youth group’s mission trip to Nicaragua, this Friday evening, June 1 at 7 pm. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for kids 17 and under. Street parking available (display the Old First placard).
After dinner we’ll enjoy the critically acclaimed documentary, Cafe Chavalos, which follows Orlando, Oscar, Juan Carlos and Moises as they attempt to rehabilitate their lives through a program called Cafe Chavalos – a culinary school, restaurant and rehab center. In their young lives, they have endured drug use, gang violence, abuse and family suicides, but miraculously found hope through this program. They learn to cook, wait tables and run a business. However, during the course of their own journey, the Cafe runs into financial problems (funded by a non-profit group), lose their head Chef and is forced to close. How does that affect the boys? Will the cafe re-open? Can they persevere?
Two final notes:
~ First: if others in the church want to help the Youth raise money for their mission trip, the youth are asking if others in the church could bake for the Nicaraguan dinner. That way, as well as the meal and move the Youth are arranging, they might have a bake sale for dessert/snacks.
~ Second: there will be no First Saturday youth group meeting this month since we’ll be meeting on First Friday instead.
