Each Sunday, when our church community gathers to pray, our concerns for the students, teachers, and staff in the Philadelphia Public Schools pour out. Yet, the problems our schools face are so huge that our prayers are not enough. We must speak up.
Since 2011, Old First has gathered with other congregations – Christian, Jewish, and Muslim – to raise our voices collectively for city and state-wide change. This past spring, we reached out to unlikely voters to successfully pass the minimum wage ordinance. This fall, POWER is aimed at building relationships with “unlikely voters” by educating them about the need for a full-fair-funding formula and empowering them to vote!
This fall’s campaign will look different at Old First than it did in the spring, we’ll be having fewer events but will be employing lessons learned from the spring to make sure the time we all give is focused on reaching as many voters as we can.
To learn how to get involved, read on, or contact Hannah. (Or any of the rest of our voter engagement team for the fall – Mimi and Michael J. and Mike W. Our contact info. is on REALM or available from the church office.)
WHAT WE’LL BE DOING:
We’ll be calling unlikely voters using a “predictive dialer” – a computer sends calls with unlikely voters to your phone. It’s quick, smooth, and effective! These calls are nonpartisan, so we are NOT promoting either gubernatorial candidate. We are simply trying to turn out more voters / engage more people in our political process. We’ll do trainings at the beginning of each p-dialer so you can be confident each time an unlikely voter picks up the phone!
Tues., 10/7, 5:30-9pm: Predictive Dialer Phone Bank (Training is from 5:30-6)
Wed., 10/15, 5:30-9pm: Predictive Dialer Phone Bank (Training is from 5:30-6)
Sat., 11/1, TBD: Committed Voter Follow-up Calls
Old First Social Hall. Bring your labtop or let Hannah know you’ll need one to use that night!
Our education system is in crisis. The next Governor has the chance to enact a full fair funding formula and make big changes. Education has to become a top issue in this election. It’s critical to mobilize our neighbors to get them to the polls!
Sign up to volunteer at one or both of the first two phone canvassing nights!
