OLD FIRST P.O.W.E.R Updates

The Live Free Campaign  has been working to educate voters about the impact of the District Attorney election, ending Stop & Frisk, Cash Bail, and Mass Incarceration.

The Economic Dignity Team celebrated the airport workers victory being able to unionize, voting overwhelmingly to join the Service Employees International Union. Philadelphia is now among the first group of airports in the country to have an overwhelming majority of both it’s workers and it’s subcontracted workers unionized A program linking race, economics,  and climate change was recently presented.

POWER is calling on PECO to offer healthy jobs in renewable energy in the places that need jobs most. The goal is to have PECO commit to hiring local residents in the NE to install green energy solar panels and increasing to 20 % PECO’s purchase of green energy May 22 there will be a the final leg of the 100 mile walk for green jobs and justice, starting at City Hall (1401 JFK Parkway) starting at noon, walking to PECO.

The Education Strategy Team has researched the impact of putting all state education monies through the new school funding formula for PA No state in the country has the worst inequity in funding rich and poor school districts than PA. This could be addressed if all funding was distributed according to the new funding formula,  but this is not what is being done. An excellent explanation can be found on UTube “Racial Bias in PA School Funding” by David Mosenkis. PA distributes only 6% of it’s education funding through the fair funding formula. 94% of PA ed funding,  $1900 per child, is distributed unfairly in racially divided ways.  POWER ‘s Center State Team is taking this issue to the PA House and Senate Ed Committees. On May 21, there will be a bus going from the POWER office to Harrisburg for those who want to show their support. We want to make clear this will be a top priority in the 2018 elections.

POWER is developing a Raid Response Team to prioritize responses to injustice,  legislation, etc. There are three levels of alert,  Red meaning ASAP, Orange for 24-36 hour response, and Yellow for longer than 36 hours.  For more information there will be a meeting at POWER on May 15 from 7-8:30PM. They would like to have resonders at every congregation.  If interested,  speak to Clark.

Graie, from POWER, would like Old First to host a Black Work Matters Event that would be open to the public. The format would be in the form of a game patterned after Jeopardy. We think that the sanctuary would be a good setting after worship,  possibly in June and connecting with Sacred C

Michael Caine is working with a group aligned with POWER to address the misuse of federal funds designated for  “impoverished, low income communities” to build an Aloft Hotel at 101 Broad St. where the unemployment rate is around 7%, compared to 25% city wide and 65% in some neighborhoods. In addition, 115 permanent full time jobs that were promised in the application related to a destination restaurant have been lost with the removal of the restaurant from the hotel plans. There will be a community meeting Tuesday June 6 at Arch Street UMC  (55 N. Broad St) to discuss how we might get Aloft hotel to do something to benefit our community. For more information speak to Michael C.

Sunday May 21st there will be a dinner celebration of movement leaders Bishop Dwayne Royster, political director of PICO, Bill McKibben, leader of 350.org, and Sophia Wilansky, Standing Rock leading organizer wounded by militarized police, 5-9 PM at Mishkom Shalom (4191 Freeland Ave.) RSVP at theshalomcenter.org/Sowing Seeds
