If you haven’t heard the good news, our very own team Old First/Zurich won the first ever Old First Top Shelter Chef competition. They created a great menu of shrimp and grits with collard greens and turkey drum sticks! Their presentation was  great as was the food. The grand prize was a golden colander! They are very excited for their victory.

The win was narrow, with only three votes separating Old First/Zurich from Christ Church’s team.

Christ Church prepared beef short ribs, mashed potatoes, slivered carrots and cornbread. This meal was one to write home to your friends about. Their presentation was the best of the three and they won Chef’s Choice award.

The Perimeter Crew’s chili won Shelter Guest’s choice. It was sweet and spicy- but not eye-watering spicy. There was sirloin burger  instead of beef and everyone said it was delicious.

The raffle baskets were a huge success, bringing in $350!! The winners were Pati (friend of Michael), Shev Okumus (a volunteer at the Cupboard), Trudy Garland (a volunteer at the Cupboard) and Angie Coghlan (friend of Jo Fine) won the chocolate basket. If you know this woman, please let Billi know her name.

The judges put their food-eating expertise to good use, critiquing each dish just like the popular chef tv shows. The audience seemed to really enjoy the commentary – the good and the bad- and laughter was shared among friends.

they even wore black robes!

The Old First Top Shelter Chef raised a total of $1,893!! That is the most successful fundraiser in my 19 months at Old First. The Outreach Ministry team is very thankful for all who supported, donated and attended this event. It wouldn’t have been a success without you!

We are looking forward to a similar event in 2013, when we celebrate 30 years of the Old First shelter ministry!
