It’s Time to Get our Old First Voter Engagement Campaign with POWER Started (with a lower tech alternative too)
Michael has been talking about getting us working on voter turnout. It’s a crucial election. COVID still has life pretty shut down. Many of us have time on our hands that can match our anxiety and anger about the upcoming political decisions before this nation.
We will begin this season’s voter engagement campaign with an online app called Out Vote. With COVID precautions, voter engagement methods like canvassing or even phone-banking all in one room won’t work. But we have to figure out how to get the issues and the importance of the upcoming elections before the people. It’s not going to happen without a lot of work.
Like faith-based organizing itself, our use of the Out Vote app will begin with our own contacts. We exert influence and build power based on established relationships. So the first part of our campaign will be us reaching out to people we already know.
We will be trained on this technology and craft the message we want to share by Daisy Omollo, our POWER organizer on Monday night, Aug. 17 at 7 pm. Once we know how to use the app, we will set up our Out Vote Day — the time when we are all going to make our contacts, with some inspiration beforehand, and some reflection on the other side.
Please let Michael know if you plan to be at the training. You can do so in the chat during worship on Sunday or communicating with him another way.
For that training, please check out the “Out Vote App. Organizing for Everyone” on either the Apple Store or Google Play.
— if you will be doing your voter engagement work on your smartphone, please download the Out Vote App.
— if you will be doing your voter engagement work on a laptop or computer with your contact list, here is the link you will need: https://www.outvote.io/campaigns/power.
You might want to look at OutVote a bit before our training on the 17th. (But if you haven’t had time, everything will be explained that night.)
Also, at the training, we will need to craft the Script we mean to share with our contacts. If you have time, please check out these tips for messaging: https://outvote.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360044006953-Peer-to-Peer-Texting-Writing-Scripts.
Don’t be afraid of the technology we use. Michael has already been trained in it, and it’s quite user-friendly.
But for those who don’t have a smartphone or don’t use computers, or even for those who just prefer writing, our own Mike K. is involved in a postcard-writing campaign around the upcoming election, and he’s looking for help, volunteers willing to write out postcards. If you are interested in learning more, please notify Pastor Michael in Sunday’s chat or get in contact with him another way, and he will get you in touch with Mike K.
It’s all too important to just let it happen. Let’s get involved!
