The Adult Forum — our 10 o’clock educational offering during the Sunday School hour– on Sundays, Sept. 25, Oct. 2 and 9 will be “Our Heritage of Hymns at Old First.”
Ever wonder why we sing what we do in worship?
Why our hymnbooks have the hymns they do and not others?
Why we sometimes sing the same words to different music?
Why the words of hymns have been changed from what they used to be?
On three consecutive Sundays, Bob Schneider will lead an Adult Forum series on our heritage of hymns at Old First. The goal of the series is to provide some historical context for current discussions of (and debates!!!) about music in worship at Old First and nationally.
On September 25 the class will take a look at the long and varied history of music in Christian worship from the early church to Old First in 2011.
On October 2 the focus will be on hymns—what they are, where they come from, and why we have inherited the particular body of hymns that we have.
On October 9 the class will look closely at the New Century Hymnal that we use at Old First—its origin, the theological and editorial decisions that shaped it, and the hymns it contains.
Bob will provide information in class and through hand-outs and there will, of course, be time for discussion.
See you in class!
