Hello Old Firsters,
Hope all is well and everyone is staying warm! I wanted to share the following::
- On Tuesday night, I presented the first module of Old First’s online virtual service camp platform on food insecurity to middle and high school students of Grace Presbyterian. It was a great experience and their feedback will be used to make adjustments to the current module. As a result, I am able to move forward by advertising this online platform to our service camp partners!
- Thank you to everyone who has been making food for the shelter guests! If you or anyone you know would like to prepare or buy a meal you can reserve your slot here! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0c4ca4ab2eaafa7-shelter2
- This past Saturday we provided jeans and it was a success! The guests were surprised and expressed their gratitude. Although we aren’t able to provide the quantity of clothes we used to, every week the clothing item will change. For example, last week it was jeans, and this coming Saturday, 1/30, it will be long sleeves shirts.
Volunteer of the Week
This week’s Volunteer of the Week is….. Amanda
Amanda is a returning volunteer who was last volunteering on Saturdays 5 years ago, when she was a student at Temple University. When asked what inspires her to volunteer here, she shared this:
“I decided to get involved with the Saturday Cupboard because my heart hurts for people experiencing homelessness. As I’ve watched outdoor structures being built all over the city to accommodate outdoor diners during the pandemic, I’ve found myself angrily asking why the same cannot be done to provide housing across Philly communities too. Supporting houseless people gives me the opportunity to connect with them and learn more about their stories. The men are always eager for friendly conversation and I am blessed by the small snippets of life they share.”
Thank you to Amanda and all of our other volunteers for supporting Old First’s Saturday Cupboard!
Have a great rest of the week!
Best wishes,
Jess Selingo
