Potluck on Anniversary Sunday (09.29)…

Ok, so Anniversary Sunday — the congregation’s 286th birthday — is getting close. (Sunday, Sept. 29).

Come out as we welcome Geneva as our Pastor Emerita.

And bring a covered dish– or any food you wish to share for the luncheon after worship. If the weather cooperates, we’ll be outside in the front courtyard. Don’t worry about what you bring: somehow, God provides — a modern version of the fishes and the loaves — and we always have enough to eat. And it’s more or less a balanced meal. (If you can’t bring something, come anyway…)

Potlucks are good opportunities at Old First. Especially if you make it your goal to get to know some folks better. We have the peculiar and good problem of welcoming more and more new people into our community. And it’s not unusual to hear folks who’ve been around a while remark (not complain!), “there are so many people I don’t know!” Well, that’s good news. And a challenge. How many could you get acquainted with? It’s sort of hard during worship. Even coffee hour usually doesn’t give you enough room. But a potluck… you could work the room like the bride and groom at a wedding recption. Or simply choose a table with folks you don’t know so well. And be bold: “I don’t believe we’ve met…” Even if you have, just apologize, “I’m sorry; there are so many new folks at Old First; isn’t that great!” And in good Christian fashion, give thanks for the second chance to meet them as if for the first time…

Really, there are so many interesting people in our community. And getting to know each other, to talk and to listen… we don’t have enough time. Join us on Sept. 29, and over lunch, you can certainly meet some interesting folks. Maybe even a new friend…
