Why Come to P.O.W.E.R.'s Founding Assembly on Sept. 25 @ 5:30 p.m.?

THE FIRST QUESTION IS: When is this meeting??? It’s become almost a publicity nightmare– with the meeting time bouncing around and changing so often even leaders have not been sure!

Why? Because Mayor Nutter needs to be there– so that he can be asked to make a significant commitment on jobs and education. Philadelphia’s new broad-based faith organization is turning out thousands of people for one purpose– to begin to make some changes in this city. To make it a better place for all of us to live together– right down to the most vulnerable!

…Because that’s what our various religious traditions share– a vision for the difference that people of faith can make in the well-being of the whole community…

We need the Mayor there, but getting his commitment and his schedule nailed down isn’t so easy!!!

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS: 5:30 p.m. at Tindley Temple United Methodist Church on South Broad/Christian Street. (We will figure out the details of commuting this week.)

Now why put this on your schedule?

How many times do we read the newspaper and shake our heads wondering, “where is our city economically headed?” or “when will our city’s job market rebound?” or “why don’t we have safe schools our children can learn and thrive in?” or “why can’t we have safe neighborhoods in which we can live?”

These are the issues facing us every day. As a people of faith and committed to social justice, Old First Reformed Church members seek avenues where our voice, our vote and our resources can best serve the issues near and dear to us: equal opportunities for all seeking employment; safe and nurturing schools; revitalization of our neighborhoods; safety for all!

These aspirations are shared by countless others in our city, people of various faith communities as well as neighbors of no faith tradition. And there is now an avenue developing to join our many voices into one unified message that our elected leaders, corporate leaders and educational leaders must listen to.

POWER (Philadelphians Organized to Witness Empower and Rebuild) is an organization that will help us channel our efforts to rebuild our city.

On September 25, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. POWER will hold its first large scale, citywide meeting at Tindley Temple United Methodist Church (at 750 S. Broad, between Catherine and Fitzwater).

Major political figures have been invited to attend, but this effort really not about the big names. It’s about us– giving a voice back to broad-based, row-home Philadelphians.

We need YOUR presence! A large representation of citizens will help send the message that we ARE ready to organize, network and continue pushing until substantive changes begin to take place.

Sound unrealistic?? Only if we allow ourselves not to dream of a safer city, better schools, more jobs, safer streets! Unity felt by our elected officials, corporate leaders and media CAN do much to help us reach our goals.

Please join us at Tindley Temple UMC on September 25, 2011 at 5:30 p.m. (the Old Firsters will travel together– in our T-shirts, because that’s also T-shirt Sunday!) Every voice DOES matter!
