Reflections for Good Friday, April 7, 2023 @ 7 pm in the Sanctuary and online

Good Friday has become the service of the year in our recent tradition when lay folks (or clergy folks too that don’t regularly preach for us!) share reflections. We also have musicians that share as an integral part of that service. Most often, we have built the service around Jesus’ Seven Last Words. And our Old Firsters never disappoint; some truly moving, beautiful and often very personal reflections and music are shared.

But Michael, after this Lent-long lifting up of the various challenges we face in our day to day lives, wants us to hear the whole story this year. So instead of the Seven Last Words, he’s asking us to work with 8 short passages from the passion according to the Gospel of Mark.

We will have “a narrator” reading the “whole – holy – story” for us, interspersed with reflections, music and prayers.

While each  “reflector” will have a longer passage to reflect on, each reflection should still be  a simple 3-5 minute homily. Let Michael know if you want to claim one of these texts as your point of reflection.

The Anointing at Bethany – Mark 14:3-9

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus – Mark 14:43-50

Jesus Before the Council – Mark 14: 53-65

Peter  Denies Jesus – Mark 14:66-72

Jesus Before Pilate – Mark 15: 1-15

The Soldiers Mock Jesus – Mark 15: 16-32

The Death of Jesus – Mark 15: 33-41

The Burial of Jesus – Mark 15: 42-47
