Reflections from an Urban Service Camp

Reflections from an Urban Service Camp

It may be a surprise to some people, but there  is a lot going on at Old First during the week. This summer, especially July, we have been as busy as a hotel near Disney World. Summer service camps have kept me busy, along with a few of my coworkers and other Wellspring members. Unless you see the participants and talk to them, you might not  know what they’re getting out of this amazing experience. This summer Old First has benefited from camps by having a repainted Social Hall, weeds pulled in the front courtyard, our children’s library was organized and we’ve been able to watch youth and adults as they broaden their world view. It is a win-win situation!

A few reflections from a recent camp:

” Amazing! This trip was very inspiring. It helped me to see that I’m not the only one worth helping. Thanks.”

“This mission trip has been a great experience. Learning about the homeless and what you can do to help them in even the littlest way is rewarding to me. I enjoyed learning it, this was my first mission trip and I hope to go on more in the future. Everyone can make a difference and this week we helped to be part of that. coming here was fun, it’s a big city with plenty to do. The things people can go through are eye openers like when we were coming back from a homeless organization, I thought that everyone would be off the street but on the way home we saw 3 people begging for money and I realized our work is not going to help everyone.”

” Eye opening. Amazing, fun trip. Can’t wait for next year.”

“Working with the homeless was very humbling. As Bruce states: “Listen to them, they all have a story”. In all my experience definitely got me outside of my world.”
