Social Justice

Old First is committed to working toward reducing the injustices in our society that separate us from God and one another. Our social justice initiatives are constantly evolving based on current events and the passions of our members.

Philadelphians Organized to Witness, Empower and Rebuild

Old First is a founding congregation of P.O.W.E.R., a faith-based organizing coalition of churches, synagogues, and mosques. POWER is one of the ways Old Firsters can live out our faith beyond Sunday morning.

As of 2011, there are 40 member congregations of P.O.W.E.R., representing over 25,000 Protestants, Catholics, Jews and Muslims from all neighborhoods of the city and all walks of life. P.O.W.E.R. is a member of the PICO National Network (People Improving Communities through Organizing).

Sacred Conversation on Race

Old First’s Sacred Conversation on Race (SCoR) provides opportunities to increase understanding of racism and white privilege. The SCoR Ministry Team leads study, reflection, and discussion to develop our ability to talk openly and honestly about race, to practice being in dialogue rather than debate about issues of race and racism. What does it mean to resist racism? How is this work part of our spiritual development? How can we build authentic relationships across racial

differences? Our Sacred Conversation is a journey, exploring what our congregation and community might look like if we operated as a truly anti-racist, inclusive institution.
