The anglo-version of Mardi Gras / Carnival is the much calmer Shrove Tuesday. The “fat” in this tradition is used for making pancakes. It’s not uncommon for churches to have a common meal, a pancake supper on Shrove Tuesday. Many of you know that. I know that.
What I didn’t know is that there is also a Shrove Tuesday church tradition of pancake races. We are going to try this tradition this year. You will need one leftover pancake (without any condiments!) and a plate. It will be fun for the kids and fun for the oldheads. And everyone can participate (even if you cannot run — yes, we can include folks in wheelchairs or even bedbound). The pancake race will all be adapted to our homes and to zoom. And it will be fun. Join us, at 6:30 for dinner (I like my pancakes with lots of melted butter and powdered sugar!), and we will do the pancake race in relay teams afterwards… Our last hurrah before the spiritual rigors of Lent.
