Lantern slides – also called magic lantern slides

St. George’s and Old First

One of the unique treasures in the archives is a collection of glass lantern slides.  Lantern slides – also called magic lantern slides – were the predecessors to the cardboard-framed film slides used extensively prior to PowerPoint slides.  Our 4” x 3” lantern slides chronicle church school classes, a church school outing, and the history of the Reformed Church and the history of Old First in particular.  One of the history slides shows the German inscription on the cornerstone of St. George’s Methodist Church.  In English it reads: This High German Reformed George Church Was Built 1763.
