I don’t need to talk about the increased likelihood of a young Black man being shot by a police officer. Those statistics are all over the news. But there is more to know about the increased risks posed to the African American community by our nation’s system of administering criminal justice. The impact of a criminal conviction on the life of an individual has consequences far greater than the time that individual spends in prison-it is a lifelong sentence when it comes to access to any government sponsored programs, its impact on the family, the community and, yes, even we who feel untouched by the events is profound.
The evidence shows that the criminal justice system is disproportionately impacting African American communities at an unprecedented rate. We will look at the causes and consequences of the racism in the mass incarceration system and how it has been permitted to occur and some of the efforts being made to dismantle this broken system.
