POWER’s Teach-In on Education Funding will be held at Old First on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 10, from 2 to 6 pm.
It’s one thing to complain about the mess our schools are in; it’s something else altogether to get involved in making some improvements. Get started by learning more about the problem and its solution.
The teach-in will include all the basics needed to understand the current funding crisis and a strategy for moving us beyond it, including:
~ a faith reflection on what our religious traditions bring to bear on these questions;
~ an opportunity to think about your own educational experience and how where in this crisis and in this city you are seeing the pain;
~ how race and class and funding intersect?
~ what is a full and fair funding formula, and how it would make a difference?
~ how we can move ahead politically and get legislation passed to fund public schools across this state;
~ how your own personal story can make a transformative difference in this struggle.
As well as Muslim, Protestant, Catholic and Jewish leaders from POWER congregations,
we will be joined at the Teach-in by:
~ parents from local schools that POWER has begun organizing;
~ Fred Pinguel, the Coordinator of the Cross City Campaign for School Reform; and
Brett Schaeffer from the Education Law Center.
Turn out to make sure you know enough, and learn how you can get involved…
