The installation of the final rectangular windows in the sanctuary was completed this week. They are all restored. In some cases, panes had to be replaced. In all the windows, wood was restored, repaired and replaced as needed to erase decades of neglect.
But we’re not finished with windows yet. The two round – or ocular – windows will be removed, restored, turned around and re-installed in the weeks ahead. It seems that when the windows were installed during the restoration in the 1990’s, they were installed backwards, with the glazing on the interior rather than the exterior. These windows are not visible from the interior of the sanctuary, though the one on the Race St. side of the building has a big impact on the way Old First looks to passersby.
We’re thankful to Fairmount Park Conservancy for their dedication to making old buildings look like new again.
