I am going to be here this week. But a friend and colleague of mine will be down in the Philly area visiting family. And that friend and colleague, David Powers, has a sermon he’s liking to preach these days. So, I have invited him to be the preacher this Sunday.
The Rev. David M. Powers is a native of Springfield, MA. He graduated from Carleton College, Northfield, MN and the Harvard Divinity School, before being ordained in the United Church of Christ in Rutland, VT, in 1967.
He lives in Dennis, where he served as Minister of the Dennis Union Church (1977-1993). More recently he served as Minister of The Briarcliff Congregational Church, Briarcliff Manor, New York (1993-2003), and in intentional interim ministries in Riverhead, NY; Shaker Heights, OH; and Wellfleet, MA. (The first two of those 2 of those 4 settings are how I know him — we were colleagues, and then I was the Conference staff person for the places David served.)
He is now retired, but currently serving as Moderator of the Barnstable Association, UCC.
David is the author of a book on the Parables, Snapshots of the Kingdom (2006) and a biography of a Puritan leader, Damnable Heresy: William Pynchon, the Indians, and the First Book Banned (and Burned) in Boston(2015).
Come to church this Sunday to hear David’s sermon “A Robbery in Progress!” on James 1:22-27. (We will also ready Psalm 42).
See you in church,
