Our sister congregation, Mother Bethel AME has a POWER Local Organizing Committee that is concerned about education in our city. (Old First’s Local Organizing Committee, or LOC, decided at its meeting this past week that our local efforts should revolve around education.)
Mother Bethel’s LOC is calling Philadelphians to Have More Say/Involvement in Schools Reorganization, especially after this weeks announcement of the School District’s plans over the next few years. Yes, they can expect us to pay to educate the children of our city, but they must also give us a say in the decisions about how that will be done.
And Mother Bethel has invited the congregations of POWER’s Center City Cluster to join them at this Town Hall Meeting.
They have also invited Mayor Nutter, School Reform Commission Chair Pedro Ramos and Acting Superintendent Tom Knudsen.
I hope you, and many of us, will turn out for this Town Hall Meeting– our city’s future depend to a large extent on how we educate our children… God calls us to serve to upbuild this city… Old First knows
that– we are after all a congregation who understands its mission to be there for the whole city, particularly its most vulnerable. In this case, that’s our public school children.
Sunday night at 7 p.m. at Mother Bethel AME, 419 South 6th Street. Let’s spread the word, and invite our friends, family, colleagues and neighbors. Now is the time to respond!
