Old First has been hosting a volunteer for many years and this has been a joyful partnership with the UCC’s Volunteer Ministries. I recently attended the mid-year Volunteer Retreat near San Antonio, Texas. This is one of the ways that the UCC brings together volunteers from across the world (did you know we have many Europeans serving locally?) to reflect on their experiences.
I spent 4 days with other people who are doing great volunteer work across the United States. I even met four people who are doing service at other sites here in the Philadelphia area! We shared stories about our host sites, the work that we do and our joys and challenges. We played games, went on a hike and took an adventure to the Alamo. This was one of my favorite events to attend since I’ve come to serve at Old First.
One of the things that I heard while on the retreat was how can we spread the word and recruit other volunteers. There is especially a need for people who are post-retirement. This generation of people can bring a different outlook to the outreach work happening in many communities. What better way to spend your retirement years than in service for 6-months or a year? The communities of service are throughout the country – in small towns and large cities.
Please pass along this great service opportunity to ANYONE who is looking for a way to give back to their community. Volunteers can age from 19 to 89 years old. What are you waiting for?
