Last Saturday, Old First had 24 leaders from our congregation and our Saturday morning program at POWER’s “block party” and internal launch for our “We Make Philly’ Affordability Campaign.
An ‘internal launch’ is about making sure all our leaders and congregations know the details and have a chance to commit themselves to the work ahead. It’s a trial run before we make the public launch later in September.
But first it’s time for Old First to have its own focus on this campaign, what if offers us and what it asks of us. We will do that in worship on Sept. 13. We’ll learn about the policy goals to bring struggling Philadelphians some concrete financial relief and the campaign’s revenue proposal for funding such improvements.
But the campaign is much bigger too… also about organizing everyday Philadelphians to have a say in what happens in their city. Too often too much of the time, the Developers and Billionaires are calling the shots (like in the Center City Arena struggle, even squeezing out the Mayor and City Council sometimes!).
Worship on Sunday, Sept. 13 will put all this into the context of our faith which teaches us to work for a world where everyone has what they need. We’ll consider how it can be faithful to be part of this campaign, an aspect of our calling in the world where God has placed us for service.
