Dear Old First,
I wanted to take the opportunity to update you on what’s going on with our Winter Shelter.
Before diving in, I first want to thank you all for continuously making the commitment to allow those in need a “home away from home”. As you might expect, continuous use of the Social Hall at times poses it’s challenges and limitations, but to be able to provide housing for so many for such an extended period of time is a testament to the community’s commitment to Outreach, as well as a tremendous blessing.
To date, since the opening of the shelter (November 1st), we’ve hosted 19 dinners. We’ve received toiletry items specifically for the guests such as socks, underwear and gloves. We’ve been able to attract new volunteers and dinner teams, linked with partner organizations to provide social services, and as of late brought in a barber – whose committed to coming to the shelter twice a month to cut hair.
The continued success of the shelter is not attributed to one person, but to all who keep the shelter guests and volunteers in their prayers. It’s attributed to dinner teams who provide homemade meals and added bonuses like musical entertainment. But also to Old Firsters who help maintain the Social Hall, volunteer to host dinners, provide casseroles, bring in toiletry items or pass on the word to others who share our mission.
With all this said, please know that from the bottom of my heart, I sincerely appreciate all that you do Old First. Outreach and all of it’s ministries would not thrive if it weren’t for such a committed community.
I look forward to seeing you this Sunday at church and sharing with you the success of Outreach and where we can look to go from here.
Alesha, Outreach Coordinator
